The two residential buildings are situated in the very centre of Åre, directly below the cable car and in the very heart of Åre village. They are connected in the lower ground by a built-over courtyard, beneath which service functions are located, such as a garage, technical rooms, recycling room, and storage areas. Beneath this courtyard are also two commercial units facing Årevägen, along with an entrance to one of the stairwells.
Each of the two residential buildings contains four apartments per level on the typical residential floors. All apartments are corner units and therefore receive daylight from two directions. The top floors comprise larger apartments with three orientations, with two apartments per floor each with terraces. The north-, east-, and west-facing apartments overlook Åreskutan and, through their gable ends, also enjoy views either to the west or east and in many cases views of Lake Åre. The south-, east-, and west-facing apartments face Lake Åre and the mountains to the south, and through their gables also have views either west or east, and in several cases towards Åreskutan.
The buildings feature elevators, staircases, and entrance halls located in the darker core areas, while bedrooms are mainly arranged along the long sides of the buildings. Shared kitchens and living rooms are placed in open-plan layouts in the gable ends, with characteristic floor-to-ceiling glazing at the building corners.
Both the exterior and interior design are dominated by natural materials. The interiors are designed in a subdued, calm colour palette inspired by the surrounding landscape, using materials and colours drawn from nature, including local materials such as Jämtland limestone. The kitchens are finished in oiled wood with black fittings.
The residential buildings are linked to an additional courtyard building designed in form of a traditional kåta (Sámi hut), which serves as a shared residents’ lounge. With its characteristic form, it serves as the housing association’s communal gathering place, where residents can meet for relaxation and socializing. Adjacent to the lounge are two residential courtyards. The eastern courtyard acts as the main entrance area, furnished with outdoor seating and ski racks. The western courtyard, equipped with a grill, tables, and chairs for dining and relaxation, is located one level higher and is directly accessible from the lounge’s seating area. Circulation corridors connecting the buildings and the kåta include private ski lockers as well as a shared ski-tuning bench.
The facades are finished in timber, with weathering steel—Corten—at the ground-floor levels.
