Proposal (not built)
The proposal occupies a site bordered by three blocks and an adjacent continuous forest area in a typical 1950s suburb. The four linear buildings turn their gable ends toward the forest and step down in that direction to adapt their height to the footpath and to the single-family houses on the other side of the forest. This arrangement opens the courtyards between the buildings toward the forest.
Garages are placed beneath two of the courtyards, but not in the outer areas facing the forest. This allows for a soft transition between the forest and the vegetation in the courtyards. The ground between the two central buildings can remain largely untouched, as that courtyard does not have an underground structure. A garage ramp is placed at the entrance to the local loop road that provides access to the buildings.
To accommodate as many stairwells as possible, the buildings extend out over the access way, and three of the buildings therefore have characteristic concrete trusses supporting their gable ends. The buildings are constructed in brick—an unevenly fired brick in brown-red earth tones, in alternating horizontal and vertical bands—contributing to the rich colour palette of the area.
The stairway unit consist of three-bay layouts with two three-room apartments and one two-room apartment, as well as four-room apartments in the gable ends closest to the forest. These forest-facing stairway unit are slightly shifted due to a hill that affects the plan.
